Trump Seeks Historic $3.6 Trillion In Spending Cuts

Trump Seeks Historic $3.6 Trillion In Spending Cuts

More details of President Donald Trump's first budget proposal were reported Monday by Bloomberg and Reuters. The leaks add to the picture of what we know about Trump’s budget, which also includes a flurry of leaks published by The Washington Post, the Associated Press and Bloomberg late Sunday, which fleshed out Trump’s plans to slash entitlement spending.

In total, the budget plans to trim $3.6 trillion in spending over 10 years across all discretionary spending and non-discretionary spending lines, in order to enable tax reductions across the board: if enacted - and remember that the president's budget is just an initial blueprint which rarely passes in its original form - the Trump administration would implement the deepest cuts to government programs in a generation, delivering the opening salvo in a new round of budget battles in Washington.

This is key to balancing the budget by the 10th year.

It also relies on rather rosy growth economic projections,  estimating that U.S. gross domestic product will accelerate to 3% by fiscal year 2020. That’s compared with Bloomberg’s median projection of 2%, and the Congressional Budget Office’s long-term projection of 1.9%. It also expects the 10-year Treasury yield to rise to 3.8% in that time, while CPI increases to 2.3% and unemployment holds more or less steady at 4.7%.

Bloomberg also noted that Trump’s budget been declared dead on arrival by many of his Republican allies in Congress,” so Trump may be headed for another protracted legislative battle.

Border wall funding shrinks in Trump's 2018 budget

Border wall funding shrinks in Trump's 2018 budget

The White House has drastically scaled back demands for funds to construct a border wall, seeking $1.6 billion in the budget headed for Congress on Tuesday -- $1 billion less than announced just two months ago.

And there is still no plan to force Mexico to pay for the project as the president vowed throughout the campaign.

The Trump budget blueprint rolled out in mid-March called for $4.1 billion toward wall construction by the end of 2018. The stopgap budget that runs through Sept. 30 includes $1.5 billion for border security but in cutting the deal with Democrats, President Trump dropped a demand to use any funding from that budget directly on building a barrier along the Southwest border.

White House budget director, Mick Mulvaney, said at the time that there was too little time left in 2017 to start building a new wall, and he touted the funds as sufficient to repair and upgrade existing fencing, and to work on roads and move the planning process along. He also promised that the other $2.6 billion toward wall construction would be included in the 2018 budget plan.

But Trump's 2018 plan includes only $1.6 billion toward the wall, according to details shared by aides.

Flynn to decline Senate subpoena, invoke Fifth Amendment

Flynn to decline Senate subpoena, invoke Fifth Amendment

Former national security adviser Michael Flynn will invoke his Fifth Amendment rights and not comply with a Senate Intelligence Committee subpoena, the Associated Press reported Monday.

Flynn was subpoenaed in the committee’s investigation into Russian meddling and potential ties between President Trump’s campaign and Russian officials.

Flynn previously offered to testify before the Senate and House Intelligence committees in exchange for immunity, but neither committee accepted the offer.

Flynn was fired from his post as national security adviser in February for misleading Vice President Mike Pence and other White House officials about conversations with Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak. Russian officials reportedly bragged during the 2016 campaign that they could use Flynn to influence Trump in the White House.

Flynn has come under scrutiny for lobbying work he did on behalf of the Turkish government during last year’s election. He reportedly delayed an Islamic State attack plan that Turkey opposed during Trump’s transition.

TRUMP BECOMES FIRST SITTING U.S. PRESIDENT TO VISIT WESTERN WALL

TRUMP BECOMES FIRST SITTING U.S. PRESIDENT TO VISIT WESTERN WALL

President Donald Trump placed a note in the Western Wall on Monday, becoming the first sitting U.S. president to visit one of Judaism’s holiest sites.

The historic visit is part of Trump’s efforts to highlight “the need for unity among three of the world’s great religions” on his first foreign trip, senior administration officials said. Trump’s stop at the Western Wall came between Sunday’s visit to Saudi Arabia where he called on Muslim leaders to “drive out the terrorists and extremists,” and his forthcoming visit with Pope Francis at the Vatican.

Trump stood alone with his hand on the wall for several moments before tucking his note between the cracks. First Lady Melania Trump, daughter Ivanka Trump, and son-in-law and adviser Jared Kushner joined Trump for the visit to both the Church of the Holy Sepulchre and the Western Wall. Melania Trump also tucked a note into the wall.

The Western Wall is not officially recognized as Israeli territory, and the Trump administration has not been clear about whether they believe the holy site is part of Israel.

George H.W. Bush, Bill Clinton, George W. Bush and Barack Obama each visited the Western Wall as private citizens or candidates. None of them was accompanied by an Israeli prime minister, and current Israeli Prime Minister Benyamin Netanyahu did not join Trump for his visit. The two leaders and their wives will have dinner at Netanyahu’s residence Monday evening.
