FLASHBACK: The New York Times Crowned Donald Trump 'The Comeback King' After $1 Billion Tax Loss

Crowning the Comeback King

Published: October 25th, 1995

Though there are still four years to go in the 90's, business and government leaders in New York honored Donald J. Trump yesterday for pulling off what they called "the comeback of the decade."

Mr. Trump, the developer who came to epitomize opulent wealth during the 80's before tumbling into deep financial trouble, has managed to erase much of his debt and is moving ahead with major projects at a time other developers are idling.

Judging from the attention showered on him yesterday at the Union League Club, some of New York's civic and business leaders are quite captivated by Mr. Trump, despite the financial uncertainties that still surround some of his properties.

REPORT: New York Times Didn't Pay Taxes In 2014

REPORT: New York Times Didn't Pay Taxes In 2014

The New York Times has excited the Clinton campaign and the rest of the media with a revelation that Republican nominee Donald Trump declared a $916 million loss in 1995 that might have resulted in him not paying taxes in some subsequent years.

The implication, reinforced by CNN’s Jake Tapper on State of the Union on Sunday morning, is that Trump “avoided” paying taxes, when in fact his tax liability was zero.

But the Times itself has “avoided” paying taxes — in 2014, for example.

As Forbes noted at the time:

"… for tax year 2014, The New York Times paid no taxes and got an income tax refund of $3.5 million even though they had a pre-tax profit of $29.9 million in 2014. In other words, their post-tax profit was higher than their pre-tax profit. The explanation in their 2014 annual report is, “The effective tax rate for 2014 was favorably affected by approximately $21.1 million for the reversal of reserves for uncertain tax positions due to the lapse of applicable statutes of limitations.” If you don’t think it took fancy accountants and tax lawyers to make that happen, read the statement again."

Newly Released Audio Backs Charlotte Police Claim That Keith Scott Was Armed And Dangerous

Newly Released Audio Backs Charlotte Police Claim That Keith Scott Was Armed And Dangerous

A Charlotte, North Carolina, police officer calls for backup, saying he has spotted a man with a gun and a marijuana joint in his SUV. In follow-up radio traffic, the officer says a suspect has been wounded and is lying on the ground.

The two snippets of audio the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department released on Thursday along with a brief 911 call appeared to back up authorities' assertion that officers believed that the black man, Keith Lamont Scott, had a gun. A black officer fatally shot Scott, 43, last week, sparking violent street protests and prompting the governor to call up National Guard troops, who were stationed on downtown streets.

In the roughly 20-second 911 call, a witness can be heard asking for paramedics and then says they are already arriving. "I can't stand y'all sorry asses," he remarks.

The three audio clips, totaling less than two minutes, were released amid growing public demands for more details about Scott's death. Police on Saturday shared about three minutes of video capturing the Sept. 20 shooting.

VIDEO: This Liberal Pundit Thinks It's A Distraction For Trump To Bring Up The Hillary Clinton Email Scandal

On Wednesday’s NBC Today, co-host Matt Lauer once again whined over Donald Trump threatening to bring up Bill Clinton’s sex scandals during a debate with Hillary Clinton: “There’s this other thing that he continues to talk about yesterday, this idea that he did not go there, that he showed restraint against Hillary Clinton when it comes to issues in her marriage. It’s this thing where you get to go there by saying you’re not going there....So is this working?”

He directed that question to Bloomberg Politics editor Mark Halperin, who assured Matt Lauer: “I don't think it is and I think it’s a distraction from, again, the winning message.” He defined that “winning message” as Trump being the change candidate and warned: “Things like Bill Clinton's personal life, Benghazi, even her e-mails....you can talk about this other stuff, but it’s got to be about issues.
